How should we react in times of catastrophe? One option is to remain silent; another is to take action and show solidarity with the victims of this catastrophe. As Jewish Israelis who are living in the diaspora we could not remain silent in the face of these atrocities, so we decided to take action by editing a “Bridges גשרים Brücken ”لجسور magazine devoted to raise awareness and funds for Clean Shelter's vital work.
This magazine brings us back to where we first met: documenting home demolitions in the Jordan Valley and the West Bank. That project was a collaboration between Rabbis for Human Rights, where Mati was active, and Dharma Activism, where Yossi volunteered. Since then, we've both left Israel and moved to Berlin. Today, though far from the occupation in the West Bank and the horror unfolding in Gaza, we've created a unique international and multilingual cultural project that combines both activism and art.
We reached out to Rainer Zimmer-Winkel, chief editor of AphorismA Press, who immediately offered the publishing house's editorial and printing services. Many artists joined the cause, and together we're planning several events to bring maximum exposure to Clean Shelter's work.
Clean Shelter is a humanitarian project born January 2024 in Germany, which is why we were able to meet with co-founder Tom Kellner here in Berlin. She founded Clean Shelter together with two Palestinian women: Seba Abu Daqa, based in Munich, and Hala Abu Assi, based in Gaza. Their vision is to alleviate the anguish of displacement while safeguarding communities against sanitary crises. Their mission provides immediate relief to displaced communities
in Gaza by offering essential sanitation and shelter solutions—including tents,
toilets, community structures, and access to clean water.
Clean Shelter gUG is a non-profit organization, registered and
based in Germany (tax no. 27/611/83976). http://www.cleanshelter.org
