(English and then German)

Mati Shemoelof (b. 1972) is a writer, poet, curator, and literary editor. Born and raised in Haifa, Israel, he currently lives and works in Berlin. He has published twelve books in Israel and Germany, including eight poetry collections. His work is diverse and spans fiction, poetry, plays, essays, texts for art exhibitions, radio dramas, short stories, and more.

His work moves between Hebrew, German, Arabic, and English, addressing themes of migration, belonging, language, and political imagination. He is considered an important voice in contemporary Mizrahi Jewish literature in the German-speaking world.

His first publication in Germany was the bilingual poetry collection Bagdad | Haifa | Berlin (Aphorisma Verlag, 2019), followed by Das kleine Boot in meiner Hand nenn ich Narbe: Gedichte (Parasitenpresse, 2023). For WDR, he developed the radio drama Das künftige Ufer (2018).

In Berlin, he founded the group Poetic Hafla, which curates literary and musical performances, and later co-founded Anu אנו نحن: Jews and Arabs Writing in Berlin, a collective promoting Jewish-Arab dialogue. In 2021, he received a special grant from the Berlin Senate for a four-day festival envisioning a Middle East Union.

He is a member of the editorial team of the literary journal Bridges גשרים Brücken لجسور, published by Aphorisma Verlag. The first issue focused on humanitarian work in Gaza and supported the organization Clean Shelter.

In 2025, his novel Der Preis was published by PalmArtPress in Germany. The translation was supported by a working scholarship from the German Translators’ Fund and published with support from the Institute for Hebrew Literature. In 2024, he received a scholarship from the German Literature Fund for his first book written in German, Jewish Sounds, German Words, which will be published by Elif Verlag in autumn 2026.

In 2026, he will release the album Die Fremden sind die Freunde / The Strangers Are the Friends with musician Gidi Farhi. The lyrics are by Mati Shemoelof, the compositions by Gidi Farhi; both appear as vocalists on the album. The project blends poetry and music, exploring multilingualism, migration, and both political and personal memory.

His work has been supported by numerous scholarships, awards, and residencies, including the Künstlerdorf Schöppingen residency (Germany, 2024) and the Tarabya Cultural Academy residency (Istanbul, 2025). He has also received support from the German Literature Fund, the Berlin Senate, Neustart Kultur, VG Wort, and the ACUM Foundation.

He has participated in major international literary festivals, conferences, and cultural events across Germany, Switzerland, Austria, Turkey, Italy, and Israel, and has taken part in numerous talks, readings, and interdisciplinary projects worldwide.

He lives and works in Berlin.

Mati Shemoelof, Jahrgang 1972, ist Schriftsteller, Dichter, Kurator und Literaturredakteur.
Geboren und aufgewachsen in Haifa/Israel, lebt und arbeitet er heute mit Lebensmittelpunkt in Berlin. Er hat bislang zwölf Bücher in Israel und Deutschland veröffentlicht, darunter acht Gedichtbände. Sein Werk ist vielfältig und umfasst Belletristik, Lyrik, Theaterstücke, Essays, Texte für Kunstausstellungen, Hörspiele und Kurzgeschichten.

Seine Arbeit bewegt sich zwischen Hebräisch, Deutsch, Arabisch und Englisch und verhandelt Fragen von Migration, Zugehörigkeit, Sprache und politischer Imagination. Er gilt als eine wichtige Stimme der zeitgenössischen jüdisch-mizrachischen Literatur im deutschsprachigen Raum.

Seine erste Veröffentlichung in Deutschland war die zweisprachige Ausgabe des Gedichtbandes Bagdad | Haifa | Berlin (Aphorisma Verlag, 2019). Es folgte Das kleine Boot in meiner Hand nenn ich Narbe: Gedichte (Parasitenpresse, 2023). Für den WDR entwickelte er das Hörspiel Das künftige Ufer (2018).

In Berlin gründete er die Gruppe Poetic Hafla, die literarische und musikalische Performances organisiert, sowie Anu אנו نحن : Jews and Arabs Writing in Berlin, ein Kollektiv für jüdisch-arabischen Dialog. Für ein viertägiges Festival zur Vision einer Nahostunion erhielt er 2021 ein Sonderstipendium des Berliner Senats.

Er ist Mitglied des Redaktionsteams der Literaturzeitschrift Bridges גשרים Brücken  لجسور, die im Aphorisma Verlag erscheint. Die erste Ausgabe widmete sich humanitärer Arbeit im Gazastreifen und unterstützte die Organisation Clean Shelter.

2025 erscheint sein Roman Der Preis im PalmArtPress Verlag. Die Übersetzung wurde mit einem Arbeitsstipendium des Deutschen Übersetzerfonds gefördert und mit Unterstützung des Israelischen Instituts für Hebräische Literatur veröffentlicht. 2024 erhielt er ein Stipendium des Deutschen Literaturfonds für sein erstes Buch auf Deutsch: Jiddische Sounds, Deutsche Wörter, das im Herbst 2026 im Elif Verlag erscheint.

Gemeinsam mit dem Musiker Gidi Farhi veröffentlicht er 2026 das Album Die Fremden sind die Freunde / The Strangers Are the Friends. Die Texte stammen von Mati Shemoelof, die Kompositionen von Gidi Farhi; beide sind auch als Sänger auf dem Album zu hören. Das Album verbindet Lyrik und Musik und bewegt sich zwischen Mehrsprachigkeit, Migrationserfahrung sowie politischer und persönlicher Erinnerung.

Seine Arbeit wurde durch zahlreiche Stipendien, Preise und Residenzen gefördert, darunter die Künstlerresidenz Schöppingen (Deutschland, 2024) und die Kulturakademie Tarabya (Istanbul, 2025). Zudem erhielt er Förderungen u. a. vom Deutschen Literaturfonds, dem Berliner Senat, Neustart Kultur, VG Wort sowie der Acum Foundation.

Er nahm an renommierten internationalen Literaturfestivals, Konferenzen und kulturellen Veranstaltungen teil, darunter in Deutschland, der Schweiz, Österreich, der Türkei, Italien und Israel, und war Teilnehmer zahlreicher Gespräche, Lesungen und interdisziplinärer Formate weltweit.

Er lebt und arbeitet in Berlin.
