Curatorial & Cultural Projects

I develop and curate literary and cultural projects that bring together literature, art, music and different cultural perspectives. My curatorial work includes symposiums, festivals, literary programmes, multilingual projects, public events and community-based cultural initiatives.

I am interested in projects dealing with migration, memory, identity, language, diaspora and contemporary Jewish and Arab cultures.

I am also available to collaborate with museums, galleries, cultural institutions, festivals and independent organisations on the development and curation of new projects.

Manuscript Editing & Literary Consulting

Editing, feedback and professional consultation for authors and their manuscripts. You can check out some of the books and magazines I have edited over the years.

My work with authors begins with a close reading of the manuscript and a detailed editorial assessment. Over the years, I have also read and evaluated Hebrew manuscripts for established German publishing houses.

From there, I can develop a clear working plan for the book, followed by a deeper editorial process, chapter by chapter. This can include detailed feedback, structural work, line editing, and regular Zoom meetings to discuss the manuscript and its development.

My support can continue through the later stages of the process: preparing the manuscript for publication, thinking about the right publishing strategy, identifying suitable publishers, and accompanying the book as it moves towards publication.

I am open to editorial projects in Hebrew, English and German, depending on the manuscript and the needs of the author.

Readings, Lectures & Events

I am available for literary readings, lectures, conversations, panel discussions, festivals and cultural events. My work moves between poetry, fiction, performance and cultural research, and I can adapt each event to its audience and context.

Readings & Performances

I read from my poetry and fiction in Hebrew, English and German, with translations when needed. My readings can be presented as a solo reading, as part of a festival or literary evening, or together with other writers and artists.

I have participated in literary festivals and cultural events in Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Italy, Turkey and elsewhere.

Lectures & Conversations

My lectures connect literature with questions of identity, migration, memory, language and culture. Possible topics include:

• Arab-Jewish Diaspora between Baghdad and Berlin — identity, memory and belonging between the Middle East and Europe. A personal and literary journey through three places and several generations of memory. Using poetry, fiction and autobiographical writing, Mati Shemoelof explores migration, family history, language and the experience of building a new life in Berlin.

• Mizrahi Literature and Culture — the emergence of Mizrahi voices and their place in Israeli cultural history. A lecture about Mizrahi identity, memory and literature in Germany. Starting from the experiences of Jews whose families came from Iraq, Iran, Syria, Morocco and other parts of the Middle East, the lecture asks how these histories are represented—or overlooked—in German Jewish and literary culture.

• Bridges / גשרים / Brücken: Building Communities of Solidarity Through Culture — A lecture about Bridges / גשרים / Brücken, a multilingual cultural magazine created to build communities of solidarity through poetry, art, literature, and political engagement. The talk explores the idea behind the magazine, its collaboration between Palestinian, Arab-Jewish, and Israeli voices in Berlin, and the role of cultural work in creating connections across borders and communities.

• Jews and Arabs Writing in Berlin: Literature Beyond Borders — How can literature create a space where Jewish and Arab experiences can exist together without erasing their differences? This lecture presents the literary group ANU אנו نحن and explores writing, migration, memory and the possibility of building new literary communities in Berlin.

• Hebrew? Yiddish? Berlin? Jewish and Arab Voices in Contemporary Berlin — A lecture about language, migration and identity in Berlin, focusing on the encounter between Hebrew, Yiddish, Arabic and German. I will reflect on what happens when writers bring languages, memories and histories from Israel/Palestine and the Middle East into contemporary Berlin.

• Writing Between Languages — migration, translation and the experience of writing between Hebrew, German and English.

• Literature, Migration and Memory — how personal and collective memories shape literary writing.

• Poetry as a Political and Personal Practice — poetry, activism and the possibility of creating new perspectives through language.

• Writing German as a Migrant: Language, Belonging and Resistance — What does it mean to write literature in a language that is not your mother tongue? I will discuss my experience of writing in German, the relationship between Hebrew and German, and the possibilities of developing a literary voice between languages.

I also welcome invitations to develop new lectures and conversations around my books, research and areas of interest, according to the needs of the institution or event.

Writing Workshops & Masterclasses

Based in Berlin, I offer creative writing workshops and masterclasses in English, German and Hebrew, depending on the project and group. For schools, universities, museums, festivals, cultural institutions and community groups.

Diasporic Poetry in the Jewish Context

This year, I am teaching a creative writing masterclass at the Institut für Neue Soziale Plastik in Kreuzberg, Berlin, exploring the relationship between diaspora, transnational identity and artistic expression. The workshop asks how writing can help us understand identities that exist between places, languages and cultures. We look at how personal and collective histories shape the stories we tell, and how writing can challenge dominant narratives and create more complex ideas of belonging.

The masterclass combines discussion, reading, writing exercises and the development of individual creative projects. The first part focuses on ideas and contexts: diaspora, hybridity, cultural memory, migration and identity. The second part moves into the participants' own writing projects, with exercises and individual feedback. The workshop concludes with the presentation and discussion of the work developed during the course. The masterclass is conducted in English, while participants can write in English, German or Hebrew.

My Approach

My workshops are not only about learning how to write. They are spaces for developing a personal voice and discovering new ways of telling a story.

Depending on the group and the project, we can work with poetry, fiction, personal writing, memoir, migrant writing, multilingual writing and experimental forms. I combine close reading and discussion with practical writing exercises and individual feedback.

I am also open to developing new workshops and masterclasses around a specific theme, group or institution.
